DIN is the director identification number. It is a unique 8-digit number issued by the Ministry of Company Affairs (MCA) to an individual who is appointed as a director of a company.

DIN can be issued to individuals at the time of incorporation or separately. A maximum of three directors can apply for DIN at the time of a company’s incorporation.

DIN is typically mentioned on all documents that the individual then signs or attests as director. Once obtained, it is valid permanently, unless cancelled.

DIN is unique to the individual, hence, regardless of the company on whose board the individual is a director and irrespective of how many directorships the individual holds, DIN will remain the same.
